2. READING THE SIGNS: THE YEAR AHEAD
The GDP shrank 1.3 percent in the third quarter of 2001 and many believe it further declined more than 1.5% in the fourth quarter. Our view was –2.4% Q3 and +0.7% [-0.4%] 4Q 2001.  However, opinion is virtually unanimous that the US economy will recover in 2002. The question for all is when and how strong the recovery will be. We also expect that US stock market to rise later in 2002.  If not, 2002 would be only the second time in recent memory that stocks would have declined yet again. The last time that occurred was 1929, 1930, 1931 and 1932.  Even though it follows conventional thinking, and stock market often are anticipatory of economic changes, we don’t see most of this happening until past May 2002.  Therefore, we remain cautious until the seasonal spring market lows.

ANOTHER GOOD SATURN-PLUTO DEFINITION
The Subdued Decade by Gary Shilling offers an interesting perspective for the current Saturn-Pluto aspects we are experiencing: "With the overconfidence of the 1990's reversed, Americans are empathizing human relations, spirituality and spending on essentials. And they're redefining [Pluto] what's essential [Saturn]- it no longer includes family trips to Europe for the educational enlightenment of 2-year olds." [mine]

We have posted our 2002 Market forecasts on the front page of our website. Given some minor updates since our premium posting, WSNW subscribers may benefit from a quick reread.

This week we plan to do nothing in the markets but eat, drink and be merry.
NEW YORK CITY CHRISTMAS (The musical version)
HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO ALL. PLEASE NOTE our next WSNW issue will be January 7th.

KEYDATES:    December 29
DJIA:               10000 PIVOT
NASDAQ:       Overpriced above 1931
XAU:               Continue long term accumulation

Now THERE IS LIGHT AT END OF THE TUNNEL as Saturn-Opposition Pluto ends May 2002!
Investors: REDUCE stock holdings even though FALL 2002 markets will be HIGHER than today.

4.  TV wonders "Who wants to watch a Millionaire?'
Audiences for "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?” the game show televised in more than 70 countries have slumped since September 11 as viewers turn from reality to fantasy. ABC, the network that airs Millionaire, said the programme had fallen from the top 10 national ratings during the first week of September to the mid-40s now.  Another good reason to avoid parent Disney (DIS) above 18.

German Drivers Queue to get Euro License Plates
….Bankers sex lives suffer over euro worries
Motorists in Germany are queuing up to get special car license plates that spell EURO. Car registry officials say over 300 drivers have paid the £6 fee to get the combination of letters. License plates beginning with EU are only issued in the Euskirchen area. Meantime, in the south, Italian bankers are suffering a decrease in sexual appetite as the date of the euro changeover nears. A survey shows 64% have experienced sexual problems with their partners due to worries over the currency swap. The change over is leading to extra working hours and the fear of calculating wrong conversions is causing nightmares in 45% of cases.  What does this ALL mean?  The value of the Euro will increase after the new year!

5.  "Money managers want to buy ... and many missed the run from late September."
Scott Bleier, chief investment strategist, Prime Charter Ltd.
HW: Obviously they were not WSNW subscribers!

"It looks like the market wants to firm up for year-end. The Santa Claus rally, I think, is here."
Irwin Michael, ABC Funds
HW: Merry Christmas, but a not so happy new year.

"Next year should be a good year for stocks. The real question is, how good?"
Hugh Johnson, chief investment officer, First Albany
HW: For some stocks very good and for the majority, better than money market and bond yields.

7. READER: You say in non-taxable accounts, raise liquidity and sell those stocks you don't think will outperform the market.  I am mainly invested in the " Afund Global 12 Portfolio 2002. "  Some of these have high P/E's and several have reached the 2002 target such as CSCO, IBM, PHG.  Are you suggesting liquidating these?  I have taken profits and rebought along the way.
HW: As they reach our price targets, I would sell some of them.  IBM and Cisco, for example, we already have. If you do not sell, at least you should protect your profits with a trailing stop.

READER: I have a question regarding IBM.  I have wanted to buy this stock recently, and I see that it has now gained 35%+ in the past few months.  It has been trading around $120-$121 for the past 10 days.... Will it go back to $115, or should I get in now... so as to not miss it?
HW:  I would not buy it now. While we have a 12 month target of $125-$130, I would not pay more than $115, and ideally less than $112.  Don’t worry about missing it- there are always plenty of other opportunities in markets such as these.

READER: I hear your message about the need to sell the Nasdaq on strength.  I'm particularly attached (always a bad sign, I know) to my biotech stocks (idph, cege, amgn, lgnd, imgn... to name a few), which trade on the Nasdaq.  If I sell now, I will realize profits (10%-50%) in these stocks.  Do you think biotech will share the same fate as other tech stocks in early 2002?  What do you think of the biotech sector in general?
HW: We expect Biotech to outperform in 2002. However, I would still have tight profit stops, sell some (not all), or write call options for April.

READER: Although a gold subscriber, I'm more of a long term investor than a day trader.  You list seven favorable sectors for investment in '02.  However, they are in alphabetical order. Can you list the top three (or more) with respect to profit potential?  Also, what is an appropriate time to invest in them?  I can only assume it will be after January.
HW: Actually all are good and the key question is more WHEN to enter.  First would be Energy, (Solar, Gas or Fuel Cells), buying on big dips.  Second would be consumer electronic companies. Third would be Gold as well as basic materials. All these sectors could be held comfortably for 12 months or more!

READER: From your record of success in timing, I think IHI will most likely run up significantly in price.  But do you really think it is a 10-20-30-40 year hold?
HW: We continually monitor a stock’s price performance.  I consider IHI* to have Microsoft potential which was a recommended buy/hold for many years. However, once extended beyond $10, $30 and $100, we may recommend some selling. Whether IHI is a hold for more than 5 years (my investing time horizon), will depend on what the company is doing then.  How many factories in operation (20? 40? 60?); how many more in contract (100?); what the management strategy is then, what competition, if any, then etc.
