2.  BULL/BEAR DEBATE
Last week, Goldman Sachs revised downward its estimates for S&P operating EPS to $51 and $56 in 2001 and 2002. Their year end 2001 price target for the S&P 500 was revised to 1500 from 1550, while their price target for the Dow Jones Industrial Average remains12,500.  I thought smoking weed was still illegal?  It is becoming clearer and clearer, the ship (US) is leaking and in slight danger of sinking.  So unless they are factoring in a 10% further drop in the US value and a Mexicanization of the stock market, this is either cheerleading or HAL gone awry.

Manhattan's New Yorker hotel is offering business travelers a "no bull" deal that cuts the cost of a room if the stock market tumbles. If the Dow Jones Industrials loses between 50 and 100 points on the day a person checks in, the hotel will take $10 off the bill. In the event of a 200-point drop, the New Yorker will cut the room rate by $20. While helpful, I don’t think this is enough of a hedge, especially in case of a Manic to Panic flight.

The Bush administration has slashed its estimate of the U.S. fiscal 2001 budget surplus to $158 billion from its February estimate of $281 billion.  But minus the Social Security revenues, which both parties have declared off-limits for annual spending, the surplus is only $1 billion. That figures could easily be $50-100B$ too high! This is one reason we continue to recommend distribution of US Dollar assets (or to buy some gold for portfolio hedging). Americans filed for bankruptcy in record numbers in the second quarter of 2001 is another.

8/22, Reuters reported “that long-time dollar bulls UBS Warburg succumbed to the forex market's deepening pessimism about the U.S. economy's prospects on Wednesday, recommending clients open long euro/dollar positions at 92.10 cents. ‘The U.S. dollar remains out of favor, and indeed a lot of damage is done,’ said Jeremy Fand, global head of forex strategy at UBS Warburg in Connecticut. ‘We establish a long euro/dollar trade at 92.10 cents with a tight stop at 91.35 cents and an initial target of 93.50 cents.’
If Warburg had maintained their roots, i.e. astrological advisors, as they did when they began, they would not be so late in getting on board the freight train, nor would they have been stopped out on 8/24 when the Euro broke 91.35.

IT’S NOT OVER; IT’S JUST BEGINNING: Saturn-Opposition Pluto ends May 2002!
Prepare for the worst - Hope for the Best.  If you are prepared, you can manage and prosper if things go better than you expect.
Investors Note: there will also be plenty of investment opportunities ahead, just NOT the same ones as last year.

3. IBM (IBM) announced its new branding campaign, which includes the introduction of a new logo for the makers of a variety of consumer electronic devices that use IBM technology. The engine inside the product is a PowerPC processor custom-designed and manufactured by IBM. Watch out, Intel.  We are looking to rebuy IBM early fall after any serious market stumble, ideally at circa $95.

The Lex column in the Financial Times is one of my favorite columns for sensible global investing, and I rarely disagree with its views.  However, we disagree with their assessment of DT being worth only 18 Euros.  It is worth 22 or more and I believe time will tell who is more right this time.  I re-iterate our intermediate and long term buy for DT.

4. ABCNEWS.com : Study: Italian Women So Busy, No Time for Sex [http://www.abcnews.go.com/sections/world/DailyNews/italy010813_sex.html]
Italian women work longer hours than any other women in Europe. They not only spend at least eight hours a day at work, but they also do around 90 minutes of housework, are busy cooking for a further half-hour and dedicate at least 20 minutes each day to exercise or "grooming," according to the survey by Rome's Ipsa Institute. The average Italian woman is busy for 10 or 11 hours a day; such long hours, in fact, that they hardly have time for sex.   According to the survey, the average Italian woman has just one hour of sex every 15 days.   The result? Italian women are watching more television.  I have reached two tentative conclusions. The first, we may consider purchasing stock in the Italian TV network RAI.   Second, my visit to Italy next April may be more business and less pleasure and fun than I initially anticipated!

Prostitutes in Chile are cutting prices to accommodate clients asking for discounts because of personal financial difficulties. The regional president of Chile's sex workers' association said its members are having to charge less for services. A sex worker, who previously would have charged 24,000 pesos for their services, is now charging 13,600 pesos or less," Elizabeth Dentone told Chilean daily La Cuarta.  "In times of economic crisis, paying for sex seems an unjustifiable luxury to many people." However, she added "Whatever their circumstances, men will always manage to find money to spend on alcohol and sex."  While this does not inspire me to either visit or invest in Chile, Ms Dentone’s comment stimulated me to review a number of foreign Sin stocks such as Heinkens [HINKF] and Fosters [FBRWY] for possible purchase later this Fall.

5.  "It looks like the market bottom we saw back in April will be the bottom for this cycle.  Investors still want to buy good growth companies and the valuations are not overly expensive."
Alan Loewenstein, a manager, John Hancock Technology Fund
HW: The Nasdaq bottom is most likely in, although perhaps not the DJIA bottom. Still, not overly expensive is not the same as reasonably priced or undervalued. I think stock prices over the next year will be sequentially cosmic value pricing.

“Doing nothing is as good an investment decision as any in these markets.''
Mark Peden, Head of European Equities, Aegon Asset Management
HW: Tao investing works.

“The process, the adjustment process, is just taking longer than I -- and I think many other people -- thought that it would.''
Jack Guynn, Atlanta Fed President
HW: As usual, the financial astrologers - looking skyward to Saturn in opposition to Pluto- got it right.

7. We are pleased to announced JETCOM (CDNX: JYT) as a new AFUND client. After my next visit to Toronto, I plan to post our findings in our soon to be revised, updated and disclaimed posting area: Strategic Planning by the Stars.  In the meantime, experienced microcap players may wish to add them to their watch list.

8. READER: Earlier in the year, I thought I had read that you anticipated a fall rally.  Do you think there will be one in October?? or later?? or do you see the market going further down??
HW: There will be one later and perhaps before AND the market will go down further.  Something for Everyone!

READER: I think we are heading for bad times for NASDAQ. Charts give a strong signal now that we will see the level I have been saying for a long time - 1492. Let us see what happens in the next three months.
HW: Perhaps, although still not my bet, in 2002, maybe.

READER: Finnish Telecommunications Company Sonera (SNRA) plans to sell 72 million shares in Deutsche Telekom (DT) between the beginning of September and the end of the year, Financial Times Deutschland reports…
HW:  If I were Warren Buffet, I would buy it all from them.

Reader: What causes a stock to split? Is IHITF the type of stock that is likely to split one or more times?
HW:  Stocks most often split because their stock price seems too high for the little investor.  Most small investors would prefer to own 300 shares of a $10 stock, to 100 shares of a $30 stock.  IHI’s* current valuation does not suggest the need for splitting.  However, in a few years, I don’t see why not.
