1. FIRST HALF RIGHT
Ian Morris, chief U.S. economist at HSBC Securities in New York, is forecasting that the economy's fortunes will sour further, with GDP shrinking by 2.0 percent and 1.0 percent in the third and fourth quarters, respectively.

SAYS WHO?
Re: The Financial Times Tuesday July 10, 2001 Bush’s Tax Bind Editorial:
“But even the most saturnine of forecasters could not have predicted that the first problems would arrive so soon as this summer.”
HW: Had you looked to financial astrology and the upcoming Saturn-Pluto opposition this summer, you would have known.

Subject: Good news, Bad News
Average airfares declined 6.9 percent in May.
Internet stocks 360 and Webvan are finally approaching true value, i.e. near worthless. Most professionals have been aware, since last Fall, few, if any, Internut stocks would get to another round of financing this summer/fall.
90% of these stocks that were down  90%, are likely to target a further 90% to100%. However, this is NOT true for blue chips like Lucent (LU), and small caps like Palm. Distinguish carefully.

Note: if you are in the NYC area: I will be giving a lecture for SIRE on Investing and Trading by the Stars in 2001/2002 at the Princeton Club Tuesday July 17th. RSVP to Richard Suttmeier (212) 361-3536.

According to Bloomberg, the fact that unemployment jumped to a nine year high was a "surprise"! To whom?  That, folks, is scary!
The severity and length of the economic slowdown in the United States will be decisive in the overall health of the world economy this year, the United Nations said Friday.
Grade 3Qtr: D, Grade 4th Qtr C-. Still, NO RECESSION AHEAD!  Details forthcoming.

NASDAQ:       2100 Pivot

2. Celestica (CLS) is a first class global electronics manufacturer service provider based in Canada. It buys factories from HWP, NEC, NORTEL and IBM, etc. and then sells them back their products, often cheaper and better.  Backed by ONEX, this is one company that will fundamentally outperform in 2002/3.  Accumulate on weakness.

After participating in several construction and industrial technology analyst meetings of IHI in Toronto, I would advise all WSNW readers to review their IHI holdings. Astrologically, there is yet another window of opportunity for IHI with a possible 50-100% move by the August to September time frame.  With our usual and obvious Disclaimer, we re-iterate our long term IHI buy for aggressive growth small cap weighting. See our latest IHI post for more information.

3. The United Bank of India is offering business start-up loans to 12 bank robbers so they can try out a different career. It says robbers take part in the scheme to turn over a new leaf and also save themselves from the threat of public lynchings. Police chief Sunil Sarkar said: "Most of the robbers readily agreed to the loan offer to set up their own business."  While we are looking to initiate starter positions in select Indian Computer and Pharmaceuticals stocks later this year, this does not move us to upgrade their banking sector, especially given the bearish global outlook for black pepper. Last year, Indonesia replaced India as the world’s largest exporter of black pepper. Need I say more?

Ananova - Fancy London restaurant serves dogs' dinners [http://www.ananova.com/news/story/sm_339051.html]
The Bluebird Café, on King's Road, offers soup at £4, hamburgers for £6.75. Dogs' dinners also include lamb steak with mash and penne with chopped bacon. The drinks list includes Hair Of The Dog (Guinness and milk) at £3.95. Dogs can have a side order of chips or a pudding of canine cookies. They eat outside in an open-air courtyard.  If English dogs eat this well, it may soon be time to review for possible upgrade select FTSE stocks such BP.

4.  "Individual stock picks are what's important to make money in this market."
Dan Veru, executive VP, Palisade Capital Management
HW: I agree.

"For highflying, big-cap growth stocks, it will be a long time before they see their highs again - if ever. I don't see a 5,000 Nasdaq for a long, long time."
Paul McCulley, head, PIMCO short-term bond funds
HW: The question is whether before or after 2003 or 2008.  Is it not?

“A new economic expansion will begin sometime in the first half of 2002 and given the length of expansion in the last 30 years, the next one should run about eight years until 2010, barring of course any unforeseen or man-made disasters”
Kathleen Camilli, director of research
HW: That seems like a reasonable forecast.

5. http://biz.yahoo.com/rb/010626/business_economy_recession_dc.html
"Either we are in a recession or this is the worst non-recession ever,'' said Anirvan Banerji, director of research at the Economic Cycle Research Institute (ECRI). "It's not different this time. It is following the classic pattern with minor variations.''
HW: The latter is our bet as technically, the US will NOT go into a l

Forbes.com: Digital Rules “Allow me to lead with my chin and say Nasdaq will reach 3000 later this year. How did I come up with that? Easy. Take the current quarter's annual GDP growth rate--and multiply it by a grand. When I predict Nasdaq will touch 3000 later this year, it's just another way of saying GDP growth rate will rebound to 3% by the fourth quarter. Which I believe will happen.”
HW: Interesting. Our year- end forecast was Nasdaq 2500, but our 4th Qtr GDP forecast is NOT as high as 2.5%.

6. READER: Does the Saturn/Pluto aspect affect some sectors more?
HW: Yes, Real Estate and Energy are two examples.

READER: You mentioned Japan should be going up.  Since the Nikei almost reached 12000 yesterday (12005), do you think it will drop below this important line before going up?
HW:  I think there are great bargains among the blue chip exporters like Sony (SNE).  These are good long term buys NOW.

READER: Is there a site to obtain Bradley dates?
HW: http://www.astrikos.com.

READER: So are you bullish here???????  Remember target Sep S & P   992.40   You didn't believe me last time... guess I should not expect you to believe it this time either....
HW: I am Not a classic bull.  Economically I am bearish; from a stock market perspective, I believe the correction overdone at this moment.

CLIENT: What do you plan to do with all my telecom holdings at this point?
HW: I continue to believe they will outperform, T, MOT, DT, NOK, etc. while others, like LU, NT are NOW a hold with a long term accumulate on weakness.

READER: Hope you had a "rewarding and fruitful" visit to Vancouver. Looking forward to your update article. However, I must say it's a great disappointment to learn that IHI has now announced (in the IHI Fact Sheet) ANOTHER 6 MONTH delay to commercial production, just when a few months ago they said everything will be ready by July 2001!  I see the stock going to be depressed further....
HW: Not necessarily.  In fact, I believe the stock likely to double before the end of September. Please see our updated IHI postings for our reasons.

READER: BIG Blue is going to be the nail in the coffin of this market… 85.85 here we come.
HW: That seems more than a bit pessimistic.  IHITF* may get to 85 before IBM! ;)
